Friendly Reminders:
Dear Parents,
-Any parents wishing to meet with their child’s teacher please call the school for an appointment.
-Please send your child with a pair of indoor and outdoor shoes.
-Each student is asked to bring a box of facial tissue for the class to use when necessary.
-Children leaving early for an appointment must be signed out at the office.
-We have a number of children in the school with nut allergies. Please assure that your child doesn't bring to school food that contains nuts. We also encourage children not to bring to school food with high amount of sugar. Furthermore, children are asked to refrain from sharing food with other students.
-Please remember that the student agenda is my primary means of communication with parents. I check it every day for signatures (even if there was no homework) and notes. I also make sure that all the homework is written down at the end of the day (even if a student has completed it). Students are expected to check mark it if it is completed. If I notice that there are missing homework issues, then we will work together as a team to fix this. I welcome parents' comments and thank you in advance for checking your child's agenda as soon as you can after your child comes home from school. This will help you to organize their time for homework and other activities for that day.
We will be also using Google classroom. The assignments will be posted there with the due date. Students won't be able to access the assignment past due date.
-Each evening students should be completing between 30-60 minutes of homework.
Within this time, 20 minutes should be devoted to silent reading. The rest of the homework time should be spent on completing daily assignments, working ahead on long-term assignments, or reviewing materials taught in class.
Homework is checked every day. If there is a reason (illness, family emergency, dog actually ate it, etc.) that your child has not completed an assignment on time, please send a note to school explaining the situation and extra time will be given where warranted. Your child will have two days to complete his homework. I understand that sometimes your child will need more than one day to finish his homework due to different circumstances.
"New Homework" Rules as per the Ministry of Education- As per Growing Success: Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting in Ontario Schools (2010), teachers cannot evaluate work that is done outside of school.
- As such, I will not use work done at home for any sort of mark/grade in any subject. Final presentations and projects must be completed at school.
- Homework is intended to consolidate knowledge and skills or to prepare for the next class.
- Completing homework falls under the Learning Skills of Responsibility ("Completes and submits class work, homework, and assignments according to agreed upon timelines"), and Organization ("Establishes priorities and and manages time to complete tasks and achieve goals").
- Growing Success states that for Grades 1 to 6, "a student’s tendency to be late in submitting, or to fail to submit, other assignments (including homework) may be noted on the report card as part of the evaluation of the student’s development of the learning skills and work habits."
-If your child forgets his/her agenda at school, homework will be also posted and can be accessed on the following website:
curiousmindsof21.weebly.com
We will continue using google classroom. There will be assignments posted on google classroom too.
Dear parents, encourage your child to spend time each night reviewing that day's class work and key concepts. Short summary of every day math lesson can be found on the website under Math. This will alleviate cramming for a test and avoid the accompanying stress. It is extremely important that given projects are turned in on time. Late projects can only receive partial grades.
Conduct: To avoid compromising the learning progress of all the students in the classroom, I require each student to adhere to certain behavior protocol. Nevertheless, please discuss with your child the importance of taking responsibility, both behaviorally and academically. Also discuss with him/her the necessity to exercise respect for others and property. To help avoid conflict with other students, please make sure that your child is provided with all the necessary school supplies (2-3 pencils, a ruler, an eraser, pencil sharpener, pens, colored pencils, highlighters, glue stick, folders/ binder). Be also vigilant about him/her not bringing any non-school related items.

Technology
I believe that technology is a wonderful tool that helps students learn. That being said, curriculum expectations ALWAYS come first, and I will not be using any tool in the classroom that does not help meet these expectations. Over the course of the year, students will be able to use computers, iPads, and various other electronics to do research, share their thinking with others and to practice their skills. They will also be using pencils, pens, markers, chart paper, notebooks, and regular paper, as I believe strongly in the importance of balance.
